Japanese Drumming Group

Classes & Workshops

Beginner Class

All new folks will start here. Basic Taiko Knowledge will be taught, including Basic Taiko History, Basic Taiko Terminology, and Basic drum info. Students will learn Kuchi shoka, Kihon and Kata. Basic drumming drills will be done every class. Beginning numbers will be taught.

Youth information

Although NM Taiko currently does not have a separate youth group we are currently seeking more youth participants. Youth are encouraged to participate in NM Taiko’s beginning class group.  In the future when we have a larger number of youth participants we will have a separate youth group to better meet their needs.

Community Group

Once folks from the Beginning class are proficient in the basics and beginning numbers they will move into the community group. This group is for those who do not want perform but just want to drum. This group will review basics, drumming drills, work on more numbers than the beginning group, and do some informal drum circle improvised drumming. There will be at least a once a year performance.

Performing Group

There will be a small informal audition to be in this group from the community group. These folks must have proficiency in the basics including, history, terminology, kuchi shoka, kata, stance and movement. This group requires a lot more dedication and practice.
